Real Madrid’s €130m Diomande swoop hides Olise cover story
Real Madrid are poised to sign RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande for a reported €130 million, variables included, underscoring the complexity and urgency of a deal that forced the Spanish giants to outbid a rival who thought the transfer already settled.
Madrid’s pursuit centred on securing the 19‑year‑old Ivorian, who had reached a verbal agreement with Paris Saint‑Germain during the World Cup and was seen as the frontrunner for Luis Enrique’s side. To win the race, the Bernabéu executives offered Diomande improved personal terms in the final days of last week, pushing past the French champions.
While the Diomande negotiations unfolded, Real Madrid deliberately let their widely reported interest in Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise run as cover, creating a compartmentalised approach.
Speculation linking Madrid to Olise intensified after Bayern eliminated Los Blancos in the Champions League quarter‑finals, with the French international delivering a standout performance across both legs, reported by Mundo Deportivo journalist Pepe Gil‑Vernet. Gil‑Vernet’s account highlights how the on‑field display fueled the transfer chatter.
The Olise narrative grew louder during the Real Madrid presidential election campaign, feeding a storyline that Florentino Pérez was targeting the Bayern winger as his next marquee signing. The buzz added pressure on the club’s hierarchy amid the election.
Madrid issued a formal denial on June 20, stating the club had made no contact with Olise, his representatives, or anyone connected to him. Bayern president Herbert Hainer also publicly said that if Florentino had an offer, he could save himself the effort, as Bayern had no intention of selling Olise.
Paris Saint‑Germain officially withdrew their interest on Sunday evening and, by Tuesday, publicly criticised Madrid’s conduct in the Diomande chase. The French club’s withdrawal cleared the path for the Spanish side to finalise the transfer.
Madrid and Leipzig are still finalising the remaining contractual details, but sources in the Spanish capital consider the deal effectively done. An official announcement is expected this week, with the club keen to integrate Diomande into José Mourinho’s squad as early as possible in pre‑season preparations.
