Real Madrid press Leverkusen's Jarell Quansah, Mourinho eyes goal
While Jarell Quansah is considered an undisputed mainstay at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, it is becoming clear that he will be hard to retain next summer – a scenario that occupies both Real Madrid and coach Jose Mourinho heavily.
International interest in the 23‑year‑old Englishman
The English international, 23 years old, is attracting considerable international attention according to a report by Sport. Real Madrid, which is still looking for defensive reinforcements for the year 2027, counts Quansah among coach Jose Mourinho's preferred candidates.
Top clubs in the Premier League are also monitoring the versatile defender. FC Liverpool, which signed Quansah from Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 for €35 million, has a buy‑back clause that can be triggered in 2027 for €70 million. The deadline for the clause is June 15 of next year.
Other interested parties from England
In addition to Real Madrid, FC Chelsea and FC Arsenal are showing interest. Arsenal had already tried to poach Quansah in the previous summer, offering, according to reports, €65 million, which Leverkusen deemed too high and rejected. The player himself accepted the transfer veto.
At Chelsea, especially coach Xabi Alonso is said to hold Quansah in high regard because of his height and above‑average technical abilities. A possible bidding war among the clubs could drive the transfer fee for Leverkusen even higher.
Leverkusen's current usage and statistics
For the Werkself, Quansah has so far played 50 league matches, scored five goals and provided one assist. Under coach Kasper Hjulmand he was primarily deployed as a centre‑back, while new coach Carles Martinez now uses him increasingly as a right‑back.
The combination of strong international interest and contractual options makes the future of the 23‑year‑old Englishman at Leverkusen increasingly uncertain, while Real Madrid and Mourinho already have clear ideas about his role in the squad.
