Real Madrid intensify pursuit of United's 15‑year‑old Gabriel

Real Madrid have moved to secure 15‑year‑old JJ Gabriel, the Manchester United academy forward who this week sent United a formal request to cancel his registration with immediate effect. The Spanish side intend to place the teenager straight into Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s recognised reserve team.

European giants line up the teenager

Alongside Real Madrid, a host of major European clubs – including Barcelona, Paris St‑Germain and Bayern Munich – have expressed firm interest in Gabriel. Sources describe Real’s efforts as particularly strong, suggesting the Spanish side see the youngster as a long‑term asset.

Castilla compete in senior football within the regionalised third tier of the Spanish system, offering Gabriel exposure to adult competition. The club hopes the move will accelerate his development beyond the academy environment he currently occupies at Old Trafford.

United's options and registration hurdles

Manchester United anticipated Gabriel could become their youngest senior player in the recent EFL Cup tie with Brighton, a match they lost 3‑2 after leading 2‑0. The club now maintains hope of retaining him, despite uncertainty over his motives.

Head coach Michael Carrick, who gave Gabriel his senior debut in a pre‑season game against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, warned that “we’ve got to be really careful of the whole situation”. He stressed the need to protect the 15‑year‑old’s welfare and well‑being.

Sources close to Gabriel dismiss concerns about his age and physicality, pointing to Max Dowman’s debut for Arsenal at 15 as evidence that clubs can trust youthful talent. Chelsea are also believed to be monitoring the situation closely.

United’s registration of Gabriel runs to the end of the season, meaning a move would be simpler once he turns 16 on 6 October. Because he holds an EU passport, a transfer to any club within European Union borders could be completed on his sixteenth birthday.
