Real Madrid eye Napoli star McTominay as Mourinho plans reunion
Real Madrid have placed Scott McTominay on their transfer radar after his standout Serie A campaign with Napoli, the 29‑year‑old Scotland international who still has two years left on his Napoli contract and is said to be seeking a lucrative extension.
Napoli heroics and individual honours
The midfielder was sold to Napoli in the summer of 2024 after Manchester United told him he was not part of their future plans. He quickly became a fan favourite, scoring 13 goals and providing six assists as Napoli clinched the Scudetto. His performances earned him the 2024/25 Serie A MVP award, and he followed that with 14 goals and four assists in the subsequent season.
McTominay returned to training with his Napoli teammates on Wednesday, just 30 days after undergoing an ablation procedure on 8 September to correct irregular heart rhythms. The club confirmed that diagnostic tests showed he is fit to play, ending a period of separate training.
Teammate Billy Gilmour expressed the squad’s feelings: “We’re missing Scott right now. Hopefully everything went well, we can’t wait to have him back.”

Transfer saga and valuation
According to Il Mattino, Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is keen on the Scotland midfielder, recalling that he gave McTominay his senior debut at Old Trafford. Interest has also been reported from Premier League sides Manchester United and Aston Villa.
Italian journalist Giovanni Scotto noted that McTominay is not rushing to decide his future, preferring to wait despite the attention. Napoli are prepared to offer a new deal that could include a gentlemen’s agreement allowing a departure in two or three years, with a valuation of €25‑30 million (£21.7‑26 million) if a significant offer arrives.

Napoli’s statement underlined their desire to retain the player, but they acknowledge that a substantial offer could see him leave as early as June. McTominay’s teammate Getty also shared the Serie A title triumph with him in 2024/25.
