RB Leipzig ends ten-year spell without Dutch opposition in UCL
In the bustling Red Bull Arena of Leipzig the cheers of a crowd that rarely sees such a confrontation can be heard: the Red Bulls are ready to meet their first Dutch opponent in ten years. Jan Willem Spaans, journalist for VI RasenBallSport, reports that the club has so far never met a Dutch club in European football.
This season changes that. In the Champions League RB Leipzig first play against PSV, after which the Red Bulls later face Feyenoord. The question Spaans asks is how the ‘top club gap’ in the former GDR arose and why RB Leipzig in particular has filled it.
