Ravenna’s bold gamble: 46‑year‑old Brazilian legend joins Serie C
At 10 p.m. on 19 June, the floodlights of Ravenna’s stadium flickered as the club unveiled the signing of 46‑year‑old Brazilian icon Ronaldinho, a former Ballon d’Or winner, sparking disbelief among fans and a wave of excitement across Serie C in Italy for the club.
Legendary comeback at 46
Ronaldinho’s last official appearance came in 2015 when he played for Fluminense, marking the end of his professional career. Signing a Serie C contract at 46 therefore appeared unrealistic to many observers.
With football’s attention taken by the World Cup, the game was shocked by this bolt from the blue. For the most part, it remained in disbelief.
Disbelief spread through the city and around the world as fans debated the real value of the operation. Local conversations included the mayor, supporters and club president Ignazio Cipriani.
Cipriani, a scion of the family famous for Harry’s Bar, said the signing gives Ravenna more than a dream. The mayor also participated in the discussion about the signing.
Ronaldinho pledged excitement, love and happiness, and even hinted at scoring goals, as part of his mission with the Serie C side. His presence is now winning over initially disbelieving fans.
