Rangers weigh Gassama sale as McInnes charts wide‑area overhaul

Rangers have signalled they will entertain offers for 22‑year‑old Mauritanian international Djeidi Gassama, while manager Derek McInnes at Ibrox outlines a wide‑area overhaul that could see the winger become the first casualty of his squad revamp, a move built on the £2 million investment and 3,577 minutes he logged last season.

The club confirmed, via Calum Crowe in the Scottish Mail on Sunday, that it is actively listening to bids for the Mauritanian winger and will consider a decent offer that reaches the boardroom in the coming weeks.

Rangers paid Sheffield Wednesday roughly £2 million for Gassama, and in his debut season he accumulated 3,577 minutes across all competitions, underscoring the club’s initial commitment to the player.

McInnes, who has barely unpacked his office box at Ibrox, says the direction of travel is crystal clear, identifying wide areas as a priority that needs urgent fixing and signalling a clear tactical shift.

Gassama arrived twelve months ago during the summer window of 2025 and now appears increasingly like the first major casualty of the new era, with Rangers openly stating they are prepared to sell the winger as part of the squad rebuild.

In his first season the winger featured in 56 matchday squads, contributing 3,577 minutes of play that spanned both the domestic league and European competition.

Domestically he made 38 William Hill Premiership appearances, starting 26 of them, and recorded three goals and five assists over 2,426 minutes, while in Europe he added two goals and created seven chances across eight UEFA Europa League ties, bringing his total to five goals and five assists with a Premiership rating of 6.95.

McInnes has made it clear he wants at least two new wide men, a demand that underlines how he views the hand he was dealt and directly informs the decision to entertain offers for Gassama.

A realistic recoupment fee of between £3.5 million and £6 million is expected to attract interest from English Championship sides and lower‑tier Bundesliga clubs.

While the profit on the £2 million outlay is modest, Scottish football runs on tight margins; with Celtic setting the domestic pace and European nights demanding extra quality, taking a sensible offer and handing McInnes the keys to rebuild is the logical step forward.

The contrast between Rangers’ willingness to sell and McInnes’s ambition to reshape the wide areas highlights how the club plans to fund its tactical overhaul through strategic player turnover.
