Rangers urged to cash in on Fernandez if the price is right
Rangers should not hesitate to sell Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez for a large fee if a significant offer arrives, according to former Dundee United manager Ian McCall.
The Nigerian international has come under heavy criticism after a shaky 1-1 draw against Dundee United and a costly slip in a 2-1 defeat to Jagiellonia Bialystok. Those performances have raised questions about his consistency at the heart of Rangers’ defense.
McCall, speaking to Ibrox News, suggested the Scottish Premiership side should act decisively if decent money is on the table. “They got down the sides of them so easily, Fernandez as well,” he said. “I mean, if you get a lot of money for Fernandez, it would be a no-brainer decision to sell.”
Fernandez’s debut season at Rangers in 2025–26 was undeniably strong, with 28 league appearances. His defensive contributions helped the club finish third in the Scottish Premiership, while his form earned him a maiden call-up to the Nigeria Super Eagles in March 2026.
The defender’s rise has significantly boosted his market value, making him a prime target for clubs monitoring the summer transfer window. His ability to anchor the backline has drawn international attention, but recent errors have exposed vulnerabilities.
McCall’s comments reflect growing concerns about Fernandez’s reliability under pressure. The slip against Jagiellonia Bialystok, which led to a decisive goal, remains a stark reminder of the risks attached to his performances.
Rangers now face a strategic choice: cash in on Fernandez’s elevated profile while demand is high, or retain him and hope his form stabilizes ahead of the new season.
