Rangers' summer signings leave Ferguson link looming

🇬🇧

Rangers Football Club have completed five summer signings – Ben Godfrey, Ross McCrorie, Dan Neil, Ivor Pandur and earlier Lawrence Shankland from Hearts – while manager Derek McInnes insists there is still more work to do despite ongoing links with Bologna captain Lewis Ferguson.

McInnes has been credited with an interest in bringing Ferguson, whom he worked with at Aberdeen, to Ibrox. "All I want to do is bring players of a high level, technical level, and ability to play for Rangers," he told .

He added that a number of players possess the desired qualities but he would not name anyone individually. "I understand it's an obvious link [with Ferguson], but we have just got to work away and see what we can do and what we can bring into the club," McInnes said.

Speaking to Rangers TV, McInnes praised the club's transfer dealings, noting that many conversations were already underway before his arrival. "People think it is easy to get signings in, but when there are good players involved there's more than one team involved, so I think the board and the recruitment team should be pleased with their work," he explained.

He acknowledged that "clearly there's still more work to do" but highlighted the importance of securing new players early. "Getting the boys in as early as possible is vitally important," McInnes emphasized.

Rangers will open their 2026-27 campaign with a Scottish Premiership trip to Dundee United on 31 July, followed by a Europa League third‑qualifying‑round first leg against an as‑yet‑unknown opponent. "With a different manager there's different demands and a different way of doing things, but the adjustments have been good," he said, stressing the role of a solid pre‑season.

McInnes concluded that if the club cannot secure targeted players, it will move on quickly, while maintaining a clear idea of the type of talent he wants to add. This approach means Rangers aim to strengthen the squad now, leaving Ferguson's future dependent on whether the link materialises.
