Rain‑soaked night sees Bray Wanderers claim edge over Kerry

Sport coverage recorded a dramatic opening to the SSE Airtricity Men's First Division promotion play‑off semi‑final as Richard Ferizaj and Ben McCormack scored, giving Bray Wanderers a 2‑1 first‑leg victory over Kerry at Mounthawk Park on Tuesday evening.

Kerry's first real chance arrived in the 25th minute when a long throw from Samuel Aladesanusi found Niall Brookwell, who struck the ball over the bar from point‑blank range.

First half sees Kerry threaten

The Kingdom continued to press, with Sean McGrath delivering a pass to Vincent Borden before Bray's back line, marshalled by Jamie Duggan, absorbed the pressure. A potential goal in the 32nd minute by Tyreik Sammy was ruled out for off‑side after Alain Kizenga’s defence‑splitting pass.

Bray took control in the second half, creating chances such as Endri Mustali’s effort, saved at the near post by Matthew Connor in the 51st minute, after a mistake by Jonas Hakkinen.

Second half swings in Bray's favour

A cross from Ben McCormack was turned in by Richard Ferizaj in the 54th minute, and six minutes later McCormack himself fired a low shot into the bottom right corner to double Bray's lead.

Kerry responded quickly, with Cian Bargary delivering a cross that Sean McGrath headed into an empty net in the 68th minute, restoring hope. Their comeback was halted when Sean O’Connell received a red card for a foul on Aime Nyembo Azende.

The result sends Paul Heffernan's side back to the Carlisle Grounds for the Tuesday evening second leg, where Colin Healy and his players will look to overturn the deficit. The season marked Kerry’s first ever qualification for the play‑offs, and the line‑ups featured Matthew Connor, Samuel Aladesanusi, Ewan Lee, Jonas Hakkinen, Sean O’Connell, Vincent Borden, Niall Brookwell, Cian Bargary, Sean McGrath, Daniel Okwute, Cian Murphy for Kerry, and Rian Hogan, Alain Kizenga, Declan Osagie, Dean O’Shea, Jamie Duggan, Ajibola Oluwabiyi, Ben McCormack, Richard Ferizaj, Tyreik Sammy, John Bilili Sesay, Endri Mustali for Bray Wanderers.
