Racing Genk face defensive blow as Ken Nkuba sidelined for months

On a mist‑laden training pitch at Genk’s Cegeka Arena, the club’s medical staff watched 22‑year‑old flank defender Ken Nkuba limp off, confirming a knee injury that will keep him out for several months and leave Racing Genk shorthanded ahead of the new season.

Nkuba suffered the setback while featuring for Jong Genk, and doctors have ruled that surgery is required. Volgens Het Belang van Limburg, the operation means he will miss competitive action for months.

The 22‑year‑old arrived at Racing Genk in January 2024 from Charleroi, a move valued at €3.75 million. Since his debut he has amassed 51 first‑team appearances, yet he has not cemented a regular starting berth.

Competing for a place on the left flank, Nkuba displayed flashes of quality but never fully broke through, and the injury now forces a lengthy rehabilitation period.

The blow compounds existing problems: Adrian Palacios is sidelined with a knee injury and Elie Mbavu is out after a muscle strain, further narrowing the defensive options for the Limburg side.

Voor coach Jess Thorup the situation demands squad reshuffling as the season looms. Racing Genk open the campaign on 9 July away to Zulte Waregem, followed by a home clash with Westerlo on 15 July at the Cegeka Arena.
