PSV eye Groningen’s Thom van Bergen as Pepi backup after strong showing

PSV eye Groningen’s Thom van Bergen as Pepi backup after strong showing

In the bustling De Kuip stadium, FC Groningen surprised the home crowd in the first half, delivering a surprisingly solid performance against PSV despite the final score telling a different story. Among the standouts was young forward Thom van Bergen, whose energy caught the eye.

The Dutch side’s first‑half display left a favourable impression on many observers. Analist Arnold Bruggink hinted that he would understand the performance better if he were director at the Eindhovenaren, the club commonly known as PSV.

Bruggink believes Van Bergen could serve as a capable backup behind Ricardo Pepi, now that Alassane Pléa has suffered another injury. He notes that the forward’s work‑rate and versatility make him a logical option for the Dutch giants.

Van Bergen seen as Pepi’s backup

“He has a motor that keeps running and turning. He brings enormous energy, gets many chances but scores few. I watched the match again last week and saw he could also create four chances against ADO, red. The qualities are there. Groningen’s style suits him well,” Bruggink said.

Bruggink added that PSV is clearly searching in the Eredivisie for a second striker, preferring to find talent close to home. He argues that the league’s familiarity should please the club as it looks to reinforce its attack.

He also highlighted that Van Bergen is a Jong Oranje player who shows continuous development. In tight spaces he excels, can win balls, and presses effectively, often finding himself in the penalty area where more chances could translate into more goals.

PSV’s transfer list has already seen names such as Arnaut Danjuma and Sam Lammers surface, indicating a broader scouting effort. Van Bergen recently rejected a move to AZ, even though he had expressed a desire to make that step.

Transfer interest and recent decisions

A fan on social media wrote, “Thom van Bergen moved me echt steeds meer man, heerlijke speler,” praising his performances and urging a move to PSV. Another comment added, “Gun het Thom van Bergen echt om ook bij Groningen te vertrekken, wat lopen die slecht te verdedigen zeg. Voor AZ nu een gepasseerd station in iedergeval.”

These reactions underline the growing belief that Van Bergen belongs at a club like PSV, where his attributes could be fully utilised and his development accelerated.
