PSG storm early to stun Villarreal in Champions League

On Tuesday 3 November, Paris Saint‑Germain travelled to the Estadio de la Cerámica in Spain for their Champions League group‑stage fourth‑round clash with Villarreal. Coached by Luis Enrique, the visitors struck four times between the ninth and sixteenth minutes, taking a 4‑0 lead before the break.

The early onslaught left Villarreal in a difficult position almost from the start. Reports differ on the exact span of the four goals, with one account citing a seven‑minute burst and another mentioning seventeen minutes.

Four‑goal blitz

João Neves opened the scoring at the nine‑minute mark. Désiré Doué doubled the lead two minutes later, at eleven minutes. Senny Mayulu added the third goal a minute after that, around the twelfth minute. Fabián Ruiz completed the quartet at sixteen minutes, making it 4‑0 before half‑time.

Group standings and stakes

Before this match, Paris Saint‑Germain had won their first three group games, collecting nine points and sitting atop the table. Villarreal entered the fourth round with three points, having recorded one win and two defeats. In the current format, the eight highest‑placed teams progress directly to the round of 16, while those finishing ninth to twenty‑fourth enter the playoffs. Luis Enrique’s side are intent on maintaining their strong Champions League record and securing qualification.

No team has ever previously scored four goals so quickly in the competition’s history. The bad news is that things could get much uglier for Spain’s ‘Yellow Submarine’ as the match continues.
