PSG likely faces Villarreal while Lens and Lille eye Bayern

In the next few hours the Champions League group stage draw will decide the European fate of France’s three representatives, with Paris Saint‑Germain (PSG) most likely to meet Villarreal (44% chance) while Lens and Lille face a greater likelihood of drawing Bayern Munich (27% and 25% respectively).

Draw format and restrictions

The Ligue des Champions group stage draw will allocate each of the French clubs to eight matches, split evenly between home and away. Les clubs français will meet two opponents from each of the four pots, and clubs from the same country cannot be drawn together.

Statistical modelling shows Paris Saint‑Germain (PSG) has a 44% chance of being paired with Villarreal. Such a tie would be the first meeting between the two sides in the competition’s history.

PSG’s probability of drawing Bayern Munich stands at 16%. Lens enjoys a higher 27% chance, while Lille’s likelihood sits at 25%.

Bayern Munich themselves have a 41% probability of being matched with Villarreal in the third pot. This creates the possibility of a German‑Spanish showdown in the group stage.

The odds of PSG facing Arsenal are 28%. Arsenal are more likely to draw a Spanish side, with 39% chances for both Real Madrid and Barcelona and 38% for Atletico Madrid.

French clubs’ chances of meeting Liverpool or Manchester City rise to 38% for some, but drop to 27% when considering PSG or Lille. These percentages come from the same statistical model used for the other match‑up probabilities.

Overall, the data suggests PSG is more likely to meet a Spanish side, while Lens and Lille have a greater chance of drawing the German powerhouse Bayern Munich, shaping divergent European challenges for the French clubs.
