Previo to Champions debut, Simeone rules out Julián Álvarez as starter
Previo to the Champions League debut, Diego Simeone confirmed that Julián Álvarez will not start for Atlético Madrid against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday 9 September, 21:00, saying the Argentine forward is still in a growth phase despite his contract running until 2030.
Simeone's line‑up decision
Simeone told the press that Álvarez, the Argentine forward from the Selección, “no lo veo para que empiece este miércoles” and will be used as a substitute. He added that the striker will help “en el andar del partido” once he comes on. The coach stressed the need to manage the player’s development carefully.
Con el contrato vigente hasta 2030, the forward’s deal was renewed after Atlético Madrid turned down Barcelona’s bid. Supporters voiced frustration over the transfer chatter, yet the board insisted he stays a pillar of the ATLÉTICO. Diego underscored that remaining in Madrid fits the club’s strategy.
Since confirming his stay, Álvarez has intensified his preparation with double‑session training to regain his best form. He aims to be ready for a season where the Champions League is a primary objective.
Attack options and recent form
Simeone also noted that Alexander Sorloth será sidelined with a muscle injury, and Jonathan David has not yet reached full fitness after arriving late in the transfer window. Alternatives such as Álex Baena, Ademola Lookman, Kang In Lee and even Giuliano Simeone are being considered for the forward line.
Atlético Madrid entered the campaign after a 3‑1 victory over Sevilla but then suffered a 3‑0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao, conceding a goal just 135 seconds into the second half. Simeone blamed “desatención” rather than motivation for the loss, saying the team lost control of the match.
The Champions League holds extra allure this season because the final will be staged at the Metropolitano. Simeone declared that reaching that stage is “muy importante” for the club and will require “trabajar un montón”.
Facing Liverpool, Simeone praised Anfield as a “wonderful stadium” and acknowledged Andoni Iraola’s tactical acumen. He concluded that imagination matters less than what happens on the pitch, stressing that the reality will be decided in the match.
