Premier League: Tottenham under De Zerbi after defeat at Aston Villa
Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-3 to Aston Villa this Saturday, on the fifth matchday of the Premier League. Despite the first two goals scored in the league, the Spurs remain winless and slip into the red zone, at eighteenth place.
Unsteady defence and early goals
The Spurs' first goal came in the 86th minute, scored by Conor Gallagher after a back‑pass from Mohammed Kudus. This goal provided a brief respite, with supporters finally seeing their forwards find the net.
Jan Paul van Hecke equalised in the 90+8 minute with a powerful header. Aston Villa, already 3‑0 down, found the back of the net thanks to a sequence started by Andrew Robertson, John McGinn, Boubacar Kamara and Johan Manzambi in the 67th minute, followed by a long‑range strike from Emiliano Buendía in the 79th.
Growing pressure on De Zerbi
The Spurs now sit in eighteenth place, in the red zone, with only two points collected since the start of the season. They have still not secured a win in the Premier League.
Last Tuesday, Tottenham were knocked out of the League Cup by Liverpool, 3‑1, in the third round. This defeat heightens the pressure on the coaching staff.
Pedro Porro left the field injured in the 19th minute of the match against Villa. His absence adds to the squad's availability issues.
Since the summer, more than €350 million has been spent on the transfer market, but results are struggling to match that outlay. Roberto De Zerbi, appointed in March, sees his tenure under threat.
After the international break, Tottenham will travel on Saturday 10 October to Old Trafford to face Manchester United, who have only four points before their clash with Fulham on Sunday. The match represents another crucial test for the Italian manager.
