Premier League seeks Scott McTominay, Napoli midfielder wants to return
Scott McTominay, the 29‑year‑old Scottish midfielder who moved from Manchester United to Napoli in the summer of 2024, is now suffering from homesickness and is considering a return to the Premier League, Sky Sport Switzerland reports. According to his agent, he has already held pre‑talks with several English clubs.
Napoli still has McTominay under contract until mid‑2028. Despite his homesickness, the Italian club refuses to let the Scottish international go. The club has made clear that he has no free‑exit option before the contract expires.
Earlier interest from English clubs
Last summer both Manchester United and Aston Villa showed interest in the 29‑year‑old. Both clubs approached the player but did not receive a concrete offer. The talks did not result in a contract, leading McTominay to ultimately move to Italy.
Napoli estimates McTominay's market value at between €25 and €30 million. In addition, he receives a salary of €107 000 per week, making him one of the highest‑paid players. Only four teammates earn more at the club.
Impressive statistics and health issues
In his first season in Serie A, McTominay scored twelve goals and provided six assists, a performance that made him Serie A Player of the Season and led Napoli to the title. The following year saw ten league goals and three assists. However, this spell was interrupted by a heart problem, after which an operation was performed.
According to his legal representative, the player maintains close contacts with various Premier League clubs. Pre‑talks have already taken place and an appropriate return is being actively pursued. The agent has confirmed that the desire to return is strong. The Manchester environment continues to appeal to him.
Napoli's stance and future scenario
The Italian club continues to hold onto its valuation and does not want to offload McTominay cheaply. Some sources speak of a possible departure in the summer of 2027, while other reports refer to ‘the coming summer’ without a year. Napoli has, however, stated that he remains under contract until mid‑2028.
Should McTominay re‑enter the Premier League, it would represent a significant reinforcement for any English club that signs him. His combination of physical presence and goal‑driven play remains attractive, while his homesickness for Great Britain appears to be the driving factor.
