Premier League Mateta pushes Fifa to void Crystal Palace option year

Premier League Mateta has taken his dispute with Crystal Palace to Fifa, arguing that the optional final year of his contract should be void. The 29‑year‑old French striker claims the last ten months are invalid and seeks a ruling that would free him before the June 2027 expiry.

Contract and option clause

Mateta arrived at Crystal Palace in 2021 from Mayence on an 18‑month loan before signing permanently in January 2022. The four‑and‑a‑half‑year deal included a club‑option for an additional twelve months, which Palace activated in 2024, extending the contract to the end of the 2026‑2027 season. The club, cited as PalaceAujourd'hui in reports, activated the option in 2024.

Fifa ruling and implications

The disagreement was first examined by an independent tribunal under Premier League regulations, but no official outcome has been disclosed. This initial step did not resolve the ten‑month clause that Mateta contests. The tribunal operated under LeaguePremier regulations, confirming the case fell within domestic jurisdiction.

After the tribunal, Mateta appealed to FIFA, which earlier this week ruled that the request to cancel the contract falls outside its jurisdiction. Consequently, the FIFA decision did not alter his contractual obligations to Crystal Palace at this stage.

Had FIFA accepted his claim, Mateta could have been declared a free agent before the contract’s scheduled end, allowing him to negotiate a new deal elsewhere without a transfer fee.

Since joining, the French international, capped seven times, has scored 62 goals for Crystal Palace and featured prominently in the club’s historic runs in the FA Cup and the Conference League under former manager Oliver Glasner. Le striker's tally of 62 goals underscores his importance to the side.

The contrast between Mateta’s legal challenge and FIFA’s procedural refusal highlights the limits of governing bodies in contract disputes, leaving the player’s future dependent on club negotiations rather than external arbitration.
