Premier League: Manchester City files appeal over financial scandal
Manchester City, the English record champion, has lodged an appeal against the Premier League’s verdict. The independent commission had found the club guilty on all 115 charges of financial breaches. The Etihad Stadium is now the focus of possible severe penalties. A possible case of revocation of several titles or forced relegation is now being examined.
Club fights back with a clear statement
In an official statement Manchester City firmly rejected the Premier League’s allegations. The club stated that it strongly holds the view that the statement contains significant errors for legal, fundamental and factual reasons. “The club rejects the allegations raised by the Premier League,” the text reads.
The Sky Blues emphasized that a comprehensive collection of incontrovertible evidence exists, supporting their position. The investigations relate to violations between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. The Premier League’s proceedings have been ongoing since 2023.
By filing the appeal within the deadline, the process could again take several months before a final sanction or acquittal is announced. The outcome therefore remains uncertain and will decisively influence the future of the record champion.
In the worst case, the club faces the revocation of several league titles or a forced drop to the second division. Such sanctions would permanently shape the sporting record of the record champion.
