Premier League keeper joins Juventus as Villa deal collapses
Juventus have completed the signing of Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham on Tuesday morning, securing a one‑year loan with an option to purchase for close to €10 million after the Dibu Martínez deal fell through. The 1.94‑metre Italian joins the Vecchia Signora, also known as Juve, as the club’s new goalkeeper. The announcement was accompanied by a Foto from Prensa Juventus.
Why Juventus moved quickly
Negotiations with Aston Villa collapsed over economic terms, prompting the Turín‑based club to look elsewhere. Juventus also faced uncertainty after Dibu Martínez suffered a finger injury before the World Cup, limiting his availability for pre‑tournament friendlies. Coach Luciano Spalletti had wanted to keep Martínez despite the setback.
Vicario arrives on a season‑long loan with an option to buy for around €10 million, while he remains under contract with Tottenham until June 2028. The former Spurs number 1 featured heavily in the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, making 117 appearances, conceding 170 goals and keeping 29 clean sheets.
Born in Italia, the goalkeeper began his senior career at Udinese before moving to Venezia, where he stayed until 2016. He later joined Cagliari in 2019, enjoyed a brief Serie B loan at Perugia, and then moved on loan to Empoli, earning his first Serie A experience. Empoli purchased him after a strong 2021/22 season and kept him until his mid‑2023 transfer to Tottenham for a fee close to €19 million.
Financial details of the move
Aston Villa had set a €10 million price tag for Vicario’s departure. Juventus countered with a package of €7 million plus €3 million in variables, a lower total that satisfied both parties and allowed the transfer to be finalised swiftly.
The Vecchia Signora acted swiftly, finalising the loan without many turns after the Villa negotiations collapsed. The club’s rapid decision reflects its urgency to secure a goalkeeper.
The lingering finger injury to Dibu Martínez- saga further accelerated Juventus’s need for a reliable shot‑stopper. Despite the setback, Spalletti publicly stated his intention to retain Martínez once he recovered.
For Juventus, Vicario provides Premier League experience and a ready replacement should Martínez remain sidelined, strengthening the goalkeeping department for the upcoming Serie A season. For the 27‑year‑old Italian, the loan offers a chance to prove himself at a historic Serie A club and potentially secure a permanent move worth up to €10 million.
