Premier League hopeful Arne Slot: From Liverpool to Tottenham challenge

In a bleak London café the English press whispers about Arne Slot, the Dutch manager who, after a glorious campaign with Liverpool in the 2024‑2025 season, was suddenly sacked by the Reds. Slot is currently clubless, but he is open to a new adventure, and especially in the Premier League his name is being mentioned again.

Tottenham in trouble

This summer, Tottenham Hotspur (the Spurs) saw a record spending of €366.35 million on new players, including Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United and Sávio from Manchester City. Despite those investments, the club has collected only two points in five matches played and sits at the bottom of the Premier League, level with city rival Fulham but with an inferior goal difference.

The gap to league leaders Manchester City is thirteen points, putting manager Roberto De Zerbi’s position under huge pressure. The Italian signed a contract through the 2030‑2031 season, but there are already calls to dismiss him early, a move that could be financially costly for the Spurs.

Slot as possible saviour

The English press mentions Slot as a possible successor to De Zerbi, a man who has turned Tottenham into a manager’s graveyard in recent seasons. An eventual ‘yes’ from Slot would give him a daunting task, as the club needs quick results to break the downward spiral.

Slot has previously made it clear that he does not want to take on a national role. In a statement to the Algemeen Dagblad he denied rumours of withdrawing from the application process for the Dutch national team coach, and emphasised that at this stage of his career he would rather see himself daily on the training ground with his players.

“At this stage of my career I would rather see myself daily on the training ground with my players,” Slot said, adding that the dynamics of a national team simply do not fit his current ambitions.

Should he however decide to re‑enter the Premier League, he would, via Tottenham, receive one of the most challenging assignments in English football, an opportunity that offers both risks and potentially great rewards.
