Premier League grind pushes Rodri toward Barcelona

Manchester City midfielder Rodri, fresh from lifting the World Cup trophy in New Jersey, United States, has indicated a desire to leave England and prefers a move to Barcelona, which now leads the ongoing transfer race ahead of Real Madrid.

Barcelona’s calendar advantage

Both Real Madrid and Barcelona share a factor that Manchester City cannot match: the calendar and demands of the Premier League compared with what the clubs would face in LaLiga. Rodri has repeatedly highlighted the intensity of the Premier League schedule, describing it as “fascinating but demanding.” The Catalan side has therefore become more attractive as it offers a different rhythm of fixtures.

Barcelona has not yet presented a formal offer that satisfies Manchester City’s valuation, yet the player’s preference for the Catalan club is clear. He wants to leave England, and the club’s willingness to accommodate his wishes puts it ahead of the Spanish capital side.

Rodri’s frustration with the sheer number of games in England is well documented. He has complained about the Premier League’s load together with the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Champions League. In September 2024, after winning the Ballon d’Or, he warned that players might soon go on strike because of the congested calendar.

Injuries have compounded his concerns. He tore the cruciate ligaments of his right knee in a Premier League clash with Arsenal and missed the remainder of that season. The previous campaign saw him feature in 50 matches for Manchester City, and since his arrival in 2019 he has amassed 298 appearances – an average of 42 games per year, rising to 48 when the injury‑hit season is excluded.

What the move means for Rodri and City

Even a switch to Spain would not dramatically reduce his match load. Barcelona played 56 official games in 2025/26, while Manchester City recorded 53. Rodri has stressed that the intensity of Premier League fixtures remains the decisive factor for his longevity.

Earlier this year he said it would be “hard to refuse a proposal from Real Madrid,” but he also expressed a clear intention to return to Spanish football. His career began at Villarreal, continued with three seasons at Atlético Madrid, and included a spell under Diego Simeone before Pep Guardiola signed him for City in 2019.

For Barcelona, securing Rodri would add a World Cup‑winning midfielder who can help balance the squad’s physical demands. For Manchester City, the player’s contract expires at the end of the 2026/27 season, and the club’s inability to adjust the Premier League calendar may force a departure, allowing Rodri to preserve his career length while the Catalans strengthen their midfield.
