Premier League forces Manchester City into relegation

In a cold courtroom in London, tension hung in the air when the chair of the three‑member panel delivered the verdict: Manchester City, the undisputed giants of the Premier League, was found guilty of almost all accusations. The charges concerned financial violations that spanned a decade.

Manchester City has much to worry about after being found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges the Premier League has brought against the club. The ruling came after a lengthy investigation by the competition. The club thus received one of the harshest punishments in English football history.

According to the British media there is little else: the football powerhouse must be relegated from the Premier League. The media stress that relegation is inevitable given the scale of the violations.

The Citizens were accused by the competition in 2023 of systematically breaching the financial rules between 2008 and 2018. That period encompassed several championships and European campaigns.

In the autumn of 2024 the hearing took place before a three‑member panel. Almost two years after the last session the verdict arrived: City was found guilty of virtually all charges.

Legal consequences and call for punishment

The newspaper states that this is the most far‑reaching legal ruling in the history of English football and that each of the twenty major trophies must be contested. ‘For Manchester City there is now no escape’, according to The Telegraph.

The Telegraph compares the sanction to that of Lance Armstrong, who received a lifetime ban and lost all seven of his Tour de France titles. Likewise, the newspaper says the seven Premier League titles that City won in the fourteen seasons during which the rules were breached should be stripped.

Responding clubs and possible lawsuits

‘Premier League clubs are considering legal action following the conviction of Manchester City’, reports The Times. Several clubs have already engaged prominent lawyers to examine their potential compensation and are consulting among themselves about a collective lawsuit.

‘If City is removed from the Premier League, the club loses its membership and will be relegated from the end of the season to a lower division’, says the BBC. An alternative sanction could be a heavy points deduction that effectively leads to relegation.
