Premier League Confirm Spurs Red Card Fallout for Cole Palmer

The Premier League has clarified that Cole Palmer’s suspension will not affect Chelsea’s upcoming Premier League fixture but will see him miss the mid‑week EFL Cup tie against Liverpool, after his red card against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening.

Spurs win and Palmer’s dismissal

Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2‑0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening. Mike Penders, the Chelsea goalkeeper, punched the ball into his own net in the 77th minute, handing Spurs the lead. Mathys Tel then added a low‑driven strike from 20 yards to seal the win.

Cole Palmer was dismissed in the 80th minute after receiving a second yellow for an off‑the‑ball clash with Spurs midfielder Mateus Fernandes. The second booking came only minutes after his first caution. After the dismissal, uncertainty grew over which match he would miss.

Fans and the club wondered what games Palmer would be unavailable for, especially with Chelsea’s next league fixture against Manchester United on Saturday, 31 October.

League statement ends suspension mystery

The Premier League issued a statement saying: "Cole Palmer will not miss any Premier League matches. Instead, he will serve his suspension when Chelsea visit Liverpool in the fourth round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday." This clears the confusion surrounding his ban.

Consequently, the English forward can feature in the Blues’ next Premier League game against Manchester United, but will sit out the cup fixture with Liverpool – a potential relief for manager Xabi Alonso as he focuses on league form.

Chelsea are no stranger to red cards, picking up more than any other side since the start of last season. Alonso said, "Absolutely. I've not seen it yet, but I've been told it's right." He added that the club has not received any red cards this season and must maintain discipline, noting he will review the action with Cole.

Andrew Couldridge and Jake Pearce, a final‑year Sports Journalism student at Southampton Solent University, recently won the Football Writers Association Male Student of the Year award after a feature with former Crystal Palace player Danny Butterfield.
