Premier League chase stalls as Noah Atubolu skips Freiburg camp

Noah Atubolu, a 24‑year‑old German goalkeeper linked with Premier League clubs, has missed Freiburg’s training camp in Schruns, Austria after asking the club not to travel, with the Breisgau side confirming his absence and saying talks about his departure are under way.

After news emerged that Atubolu requested the team stay in Freiburg, club bosses confirmed the German goalkeeper was not part of the squad travelling to Schruns. The decision leaves the training camp roster incomplete as discussions about his exit continue.

“We decided together with Noah that he would continue his training program in Freiburg at this stage,” board member Jochen Saier said before departure for Austria. He added that personal discussions with clubs can be coordinated better from Freiburg than from the camp in Schruns.

Atubolu has already turned down offers from Premier League newcomers Hull City and Coventry City, hoping for a move to a more established side. Aston Villa and Bournemouth have been reported as showing interest in the goalkeeper.

The 24‑year‑old featured in 50 games across all competitions last season, keeping 12 clean sheets for Freiburg. Freiburg finished as runners‑up in the UEFA Europa League, losing the final to Aston Villa.

Ahead of the 2026/27 season, Freiburg signed Werder Bremen’s Mio Backhaus for €15 million, a move that paves the way for Atubolu’s departure.

Club officials say discussions about his departure will continue while he remains in Freiburg.
