Porto’s €25 million deal for Rodrigo Mora sparks clause confusion

This morning Roma confirmed that Porto have secured the signing of young talent Rodrigo Mora, with the transfer reported as €25 million plus €2 million in bonuses and a 50 % resale clause for the next two years, and will shape the clubs' financial planning.

Questa mattina the Portuguese side also issued a statement, but its wording created some confusion about the transfer figures and the clauses that will apply in future years.

It must be noted that all sporting rights – the so‑called ‘card’ – remain with Roma, because co‑ownership of players has been prohibited in Italia since 2014.

Financial terms of the deal

Il Porto separates sporting rights from economic rights and states that the transaction was concluded on the basis of €25 million plus €2 million in bonuses, figures described by Calcio e Finanza as very difficult to achieve. This explains the confusion surrounding the 50 % figure mentioned in the announcement.

Resale clause for the next two years

According to the information released, Porto will retain a 50 % share of any future resale fee for the next two years. Should Roma sell Rodrigo Mora during that period, the Portuguese club would be entitled to half of the amount received.

However, within the same timeframe Roma can choose to pay an additional €25 million up‑front to Porto, thereby removing the resale clause and keeping all benefits of any later transfer for itself.

In any case, the €25 million payment must be made by Roma after the next 24 months if the club does not decide earlier and if it has not transferred the player to another side.

Thus, the structure of the agreement will become fully clear within the coming two years, giving both clubs a defined financial pathway for Rodrigo Mora’s future.
