Police probe Cardiff's Krystian Bielik over throat grab at Fratton
At Fratton Park in the 70th minute of the Saturday Championship clash, Cardiff City midfielder Krystian Bielik appeared to clutch the throat of a young Portsmouth supporter as he chased a wayward ball. The 2‑0 defeat for the Bluebirds prompted Hampshire Police to launch a common‑assault investigation on 6 September 2026.
Police and club reactions
Police confirmed they are investigating an alleged assault on the teenage fan, stating: “We can confirm that we are investigating an incident in which a teenage boy was reportedly the victim of a common assault during the football match at Fratton Park. Our enquiries are ongoing.”
Portsmouth Football Club issued a statement saying the matter is a safeguarding issue under joint police and club investigation, urging the public not to speculate and stressing the welfare of young people as paramount. The club added that it would liaise with relevant parties as enquiries progress.
Cardiff head coach Brian Barry‑Murphy told reporters that Bielik had been “slapped in the face” by the fan and praised the referee for handling the incident impeccably, adding that the FA would review the referee’s report.
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho apologised to Cardiff, describing the episode as a “kerfuffle” and insisting the club will continue to create a challenging atmosphere at Fratton Park while preventing such incidents.
The Football Association has been notified and will examine the referee’s match report, while Cardiff City said it is satisfied with officials’ actions and that player protection remains a priority.
So the supporter involved was ejected, and another fan later threw a ball at the head of Cardiff defender Perry Ng. Bielik, 28, a former Arsenal academy graduate, is making his fourth appearance for Cardiff after joining the Bluebirds last month. The incident has dominated Sport headlines across the country.
