Police close probe as FA charges Cardiff Bielik for September clash

Cardiff defender Krystian Bielik has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association after a police inquiry was closed, following an altercation with a Portsmouth fan during the Championship match on Saturday 5 September. The incident, which saw the 28‑year‑old player reach for a ball in the crowd, has now prompted a formal response from the FA.

Police investigation closed

Hampshire Police were notified during the match and immediately launched an investigation into the incident at Fratton Park on 5 September 2026. The force later issued a statement confirming the probe was concluded, describing the resolution as an out‑of‑court disposal with an apology from the player. No further action will be taken.

FA misconduct charge

The Football Association announced that Bielik has been charged with misconduct, alleging he acted in an improper manner around the 71st minute of the game. The FA gave the 28‑year‑old until Friday 25 September to submit a response to the charge.

On‑field clash details

During the second half, Bielik went to retrieve a ball that had entered the crowd and appeared to grab a young Portsmouth supporter by the throat after the fan slapped him. Several supporters made gestures suggesting a throat grab, and the fan was subsequently ejected. Play was briefly halted, but the referee took no further action against Bielik.

Coaches react to incident

Cardiff head coach Brian Barry‑Murphy claimed Bielik "got slapped in the face" and defended his player’s conduct. Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho apologised to the Cardiff players after the game and later said he was "absolutely furious" at the position he was put in over the incident.

Club statements and protection

Cardiff City issued a statement saying they were satisfied with how match officials handled the situation and that player protection would always be paramount. The club has been asked for further comment on the FA charge.

Bielik's Cardiff tenure

The Poland international joined Cardiff City from West Bromwich Albion in the summer transfer window and has made six appearances for Brian Barry‑Murphy’s side. At 28 years old, Bielik remains a key figure in the squad despite the recent controversy.

Cardiff's Championship start

Cardiff City have made a slow start to their Championship campaign, sitting 21st in the table with just one win from the opening eight games. The club’s position adds pressure as they seek to improve results following the September defeat.
