Pocognoli tells snubbed players to keep fighting as Scotland gear up

Sebastien Pocognoli told players omitted from his first Scotland squad not to give up, insisting the door remains open. The new boss took his 28‑man group to Spain on 22 September 2026 to prepare for the Nations League opener against Slovenia on Saturday, with matches against Slovenia, Switzerland and North Macedonia as Scotland chase promotion from League B.

John McGarry, Scottish Chief Sports Feature Writer, published the comments on 22 September 2026.

Squad composition and injury replacements

Pocognoli initially named a 28‑man squad for the quadruple header. Blackburn’s Kristi Montgomery was promoted from the Under‑21s on Monday after Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean withdrew through injury. Hearts’ Calvin Miller and Rangers’ James Penrice were not called up this time. ‘There are many players who deserve to be there,’ he added. He stressed that the selection is not definitive and that further talent could still earn a place.

Training camp and preparation

The squad trained at Spain’s La Manga complex yesterday. Pocognoli was hugely impressed by the players’ application and, with his coaches, decided to curtail the session, skipping the final block because it was quite hot. He explained that ending on a positive note was preferable. Tomorrow the team will play more open games to expose mistakes and good moments before the Slovenia match.

Pocognoli said the first selection will evolve, describing it as ‘just the first selection’ and part of football. He warned that giving up is the worst attitude, adding ‘if you perform well, you will get the chance of the opportunity.’ He noted that players who excel now have a better chance to remain in the camp for November. The coach reiterated that the door is never closed for those who keep performing.

Scotland face Slovenia twice, then Switzerland and North Macedonia during the extended international break, aiming to climb out of League B. The Nations League fixtures provide a platform for new talents to force their way into future Scotland squads.
