Pocognoli backs McBurnie as cornerstone of Scotland’s youth‑focused rebuild
New Scotland head coach Sebastian Pocognoli has unveiled his inaugural squad, reinstating striker Oli McBurnie and handing five first call‑ups among seven uncapped players as he outlines a style‑centred, youth‑leaning project. He stressed the importance of experience blended with fresh talent, promising a new approach on the pitch.
Selection philosophy and squad mix
Pocognoli explained that “the most important thing is regarding the style of play I want”. He added that his focus is to select players that fit that style, saying the squad offers “a good mix of experience and players going for their first cap and players that are back”. The coach highlighted the need for experienced heads who have “just passed the DNA, the heritage and also the culture”.
Among the newcomers, Brondby defender and captain Luis Binks required no persuasion, having already represented England and Scotland at youth level. Pocognoli remarked, “I don’t need to convince the players to play for the country. For me it’s timing, the timing was right”. He warned that if he had to convince players, “they will not be there”.
McBurnie returns and youthful core
Regarding the decision to bring Oli McBurnie back, Pocognoli said it was driven by “style of play, playing time and performance”. He noted that McBurnie “had a great season last season with Hull, now playing in the Premier League”. The coach framed the move as the start of “a new journey, a new book, it’s a new opportunity for some players”.
Pocognoli says Scotland stay on track after Slovenia defeat
Seven of the selected players remain eligible for Under‑21 competition, underscoring the youthful complexion of the group. Pocognoli warned, “Just to be clear, I want to do this, but I will never do it just because I want to try a team. Whoever I selected has to perform well”.
He accepted that “some experimentation you have to do” at the start of his tenure, but insisted the “most important thing is to continue winning”. The head coach also said the “door is not closed” on those omitted, adding that his analysis shows the squad can fit the new tactical vision.
Celtic full‑back Colby Donovan earned his first call‑up and has been praised for his current form. Pocognoli noted that Donovan “needs to improve on things like every young lad”, signalling the coach’s realistic expectations for the newcomer.
