Pochettino warns Belgium is a World Cup favourite ahead of round‑of‑16 clash
In Seattle, United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino surveyed the looming round‑of‑16 clash at the 2026 World Cup, aware that Belgium had already beaten his side 5‑2 in a recent friendly and that the Europeans are seen as title favourites.
The two nations met in a preparatory match at the end of March, where Belgium imposed a 5‑2 victory over the United States. That result underscored the challenge awaiting Pochettino’s players in Kansas City.
The United States secured their place in the last‑16 after a 2‑0 win over Bosnia‑Herzegovina, confirming their progression despite a mixed group stage. The win cemented their berth and set up the encounter with Belgium.
"Before even the start of the World Cup, and after what I have seen in the first matches, I consider Belgium as one of the favourites for the world title," Pochettino said, highlighting his respect for the Belgian side.
He added, "Belgium is a team of exceptional quality with an excellent national coach, whom I know very well (Rudi Garcia). It will be a very difficult match and we will have to surpass ourselves," emphasizing the tactical respect he holds for Rudi Garcia’s squad.
"We must continue to dream and to work hard. Thanks to the support of our fans in Seattle, we must believe in our chances to get to the next round," Pochettino concluded, urging his players to draw strength from the home crowd.
The knockout tie is scheduled for Tuesday next at 02:00 a.m. Belgian time, meaning supporters in Belgium will need to stay up late or rise early to watch the live action.
The United States have shown a strong start to the tournament, winning three matches before a 3‑2 loss to Turkey, and have reshuffled their squad while qualification was already assured.
A similar round‑of‑16 meeting occurred at the 2014 World Cup, when Belgium, then coached by Marc Wilmots, prevailed 2‑1 after , a reminder of the difficulty the Americans now face.
