PM Andy Burnham weighs knighthood as Kane lifts Ballon d'Or

Harry Kane secured his first Ballon d'Or on Monday in London, becoming the first Englishman to lift the award in 25 years, as Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s office weighed whether a knighthood should follow the triumph for the nation.

Award triumph against global rivals

The England and Bayern Munich frontman was crowned the world’s best footballer at a glitzy ceremony in London on Monday evening. He fended off strong competition from Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal.

Kane has been receiving messages of congratulations since the ceremony, with number 10 among those who have spoken out. Daniel Orme of Sport recorded the outpouring of praise across the football community.

Political debate over a possible knighthood

Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s spokeswoman said, “To be the first Englishman to win it in 25 years is an extraordinary achievement, and what a moment to do it here at home, 70 years after Sir Stanley Matthews won the inaugural award.” She added that Kane “continues to set a brilliant example to young players across the country” and that the nation would be “incredibly proud”.

Labour MPs Rosena Allin‑Khan and Clive Efford have suggested that when Kane “calls it a day” he should become the latest footballing knight. When asked about a New Year’s Honours List, No.10 refused to rule it out completely.

The spokeswoman continued, “Everyone would agree Harry Kane has given an enormous amount to English football, and this is a very special moment for him in the country. But, as ever, I’m not going to pre‑empt the honours process.”

“I am almost speechless. Being here in London has made it extra special,” Kane said after receiving the Ballon d’Or. “Thank you to everyone who voted for me – it was a tough year, but the world‑class players in the room made it unforgettable.”

Kane praised his England teammates, recalling the “togetherness in the hotel in the World Cup” and saying the captaincy was “an honour”. He also lauded Thomas Tuchel and the England staff, describing their leadership as “something to be admired”.
