Pierre Sage admits poor communication that upset the Sang et Or

In the locker rooms of the Coupe de France stadium, as Lens supporters cheered the 3‑1 victory over Nice, coach Pierre Sage announced his imminent departure for Crystal Palace, instantly sparking the anger of the Sang et Or.

Sage had initially said he wanted to stay at Lens, before reversing his decision and signing with Crystal Palace. This volte‑face fed supporters' frustration, who felt betrayed by the lack of clarity.

Public mea‑culpa

In an interview with Ligue 1+, Sage offered his apologies, describing his action as a “mea‑culpa”. When asked about a possible improvement in his communication, he immediately replied “Yes”, adding that he would have secured his media appearances in the days following the final.

He recalled that he had been “attacked on topics I wasn’t prepared for”, notably the fact of potentially being on his way out while he simply wanted to talk about the “fantastic experience” he had with the Sang et Or. Sage describes this episode as a negative learning experience that jeopardizes positive elements.

Supporters' reaction

Asked about the frustration that ran through supporters after his reversal and the mid‑June announcement of his departure, just a year after his arrival in Artois, Sage said: “I completely understand it.” He then issued a challenge to anyone in a similar situation to make a decision quickly.

Invited to Téléfoot the day after the jubilation that followed the Coupe de France final, Sage had said he was ready to stay at Lens while also mentioning his interest in the Premier League for the future. Contacts with Crystal Palace ultimately hastened his departure.

Pierre Sage’s case illustrates how clumsy communication can damage the relationship between a coach and his supporters, even after a season crowned by a Coupe de France victory. It reminds clubs of the importance of immediate transparency during transfers.
