Pepo back at the Bernabeu, among the shadows of Donnarumma and Karius
Inter goalkeeper Pepo suffered a decisive mistake against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, but he reacted immediately, showing character; the gesture was compared to Donnarumma’s four years ago and to Karius in the 2018 Champions final, according to experts.
Reactions from the protagonists
Josep Martinez closed the chapter of the flop at the Bernabeu on his Instagram profile, showing awareness of the mistake and the desire to restart.
"It's not easy to make a mistake like that, but what matters to me is that it slipped onto him, after that he delivered a great performance," observed defender Chivu. His comment highlighted Pepo’s recovery ability.
"What cannot be accepted is the superficiality at that moment and the failure to interpret the game situation, the match and the context at the Bernabeu," said Massimo Callegari in yesterday’s edition of Sportmediaset. The coach emphasized the importance of a correct reading of the game.
"In my view, the goalkeeper is a bit too much of a show‑off with his feet," commented Sandro Sabatini to Pressing after the league match against Monza. His warning was directed at Pepo to avoid excesses.
Pepo’s mistakes are part of a series of errors made by goalkeepers against Real, from Donnarumma’s flop four years ago to Karius’s spectacular mistake in the 2018 Champions final. In all cases Real was the common opponent.
