Paul Merson warns Arsenal lack a superstar will hurt Champions League
Former England midfielder Paul Merson believes Arsenal will fall short in this season’s Champions League because the Gunners failed to add a true ‘X‑factor’ striker. He argues that missing a superstar such as Vinicius Junior or Julian Alvarez leaves a glaring gap in their attack as they chase European glory.
Merson pointed out that Arsenal’s current forward line lacks the cutting edge needed against Europe’s elite. ‘They have enough to win the Premier League,’ he told, ‘but they are missing that little ingredient in front of goal.’
New signings and spending spree
Arsenal reached the Champions League final last term after beating Atletico Madrid to set up a clash with the holders Paris Saint-Germain. In preparation for the new campaign they splashed out around £160 million on Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa and Christos Tzolis, and secured Guimaraes from Newcastle for £75 million.
Kai Havertz opened the final in Budapest after just six minutes, giving the Gunners a flying start before Ousmane Dembele’s penalty sent PSG to a shootout victory.
Upcoming group‑stage test
Arsenal kick off their Champions League group stage away to Napoli later this evening, with confidence high after three successive Premier League wins over Coventry, Aston Villa and Chelsea.
When asked whether supporters would prefer a league title or European triumph, Merson replied, ‘Now they’ve won the Premier League after a long time, I think it would probably be the Champions League.’ He added that fans would love to sing a victory song at away grounds.
A picture from Getty shows the Gunners celebrating in Budapest, while a PA photo captured the dramatic penalty shootout against Paris Saint-Germain. He even mentioned the word Saint when referring to Paris Saint-Germain and noted ‘Le’ Paris Saint-Germain as the benchmark Arsenal must reach.
Until Arsenal secure an X‑factor signing, Merson warns their Champions League ambitions will remain fragile, with Europe’s top clubs ready to exploit any lack of firepower.
