Paul Merson links Arsenal breakthrough to JJ Gabriel's Man Utd exit

Manchester United face a potential void in their attacking pipeline as 15‑year‑old forward JJ Gabriel, a club academy product since age eleven, is reportedly seeking to cancel his registration on Tuesday, a move Paul Merson links to Max Dowman's breakthrough at Arsenal.

Gabriel's rise through United's ranks

JJ Gabriel joined Manchester United at the age of eleven and has been fast‑tracked through the academy. He first trained with the first‑team squad under Ruben Amorim and was named the Under‑18 Premier League Player of the Season last term. Widely regarded as one of the most exciting English talents, the 15‑year‑old forward has already featured regularly in senior training sessions.

Elite interest and internal setbacks

The disappointment unfolded at Old Trafford on Tuesday as reports indicated that Gabriel had asked for his registration with the Red Devils to be cancelled with immediate effect. Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid are said to be monitoring the England Under‑17 international, while Michael Carrick had planned to include him in the squad for the Brighton fixture. The Sun claimed that Carrick’s decision to start Shea Lacey and Harry Amass in United’s Champions League win over Sabah was the “straw that broke the camel’s back” for Gabriel’s camp.

Former England midfielder Paul Merson told News that Gabriel is “an unbelievable talent” and suggested the youngster’s desire to leave may be sparked by Max Dowman's recent breakthrough at Arsenal. Merson argued that seeing Dowman and Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha earn first‑team chances makes a player of Gabriel’s calibre impatient for senior football.

Max Dowman’s own rise has been dramatic; he scored a brace at Portman Road as Arsenal progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Merson praised the Gunners’ wonderkid, saying he “plays as if he is in his own age group” and that Arsenal have produced a “Rolls‑Royce of a football club” for the teenager.

Merson warned that Europe’s elite clubs will be “falling over themselves” to sign the England Under‑17 forward, calling his potential departure “a massive, massive blow for Manchester United”. He added that “there won’t be a club that doesn’t want him”.

Despite the interest, Gabriel has not yet made a senior appearance for his boyhood side. His agent is reportedly insisting that he does not wish to renew his registration, leaving the future of the Red Devils’ prized academy product uncertain.

Should the registration be cancelled, United will lose a forward who has been groomed for first‑team action since his early teens, widening the gap in their attacking options as the season progresses.
