Patrick Vieira's Arsenal legacy eclipses rival claims
On 14 August 1996 Arsenal announced the signing of Patrick Vieira from AC Milan, a move that sparked a nine‑year spell in which the French midfielder made 406 appearances for the Gunners under Arsene Wenger, winning three Premier League crowns and four FA Cups.
In his first full season as manager Arsene Wenger guided Arsenal to their first league title since 1991 and their maiden Premier League triumph, a milestone achieved only after Manchester United had been knocked off top spot for the second time in the Premier League era. Vieira played a key part, notably scoring a 27th‑minute strike to put the Gunners 2‑0 up in a 3‑2 victory over Sir Alex Ferguson’s men. That win signalled the Gunners’ transition from pretenders to genuine challengers.
Double triumphs and cup glory
During Vieira’s tenure Arsenal secured two domestic doubles, first in 1998 and again in 2002. The arrivals of Emmanuel Petit, Marc Overmars and Nicolas Anelka helped the Gunners edge United in the 1998 title race and later down Newcastle United 2‑0 in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
In 2002 Arsenal romped to the Premier League crown, finishing seven points clear of Liverpool and ten ahead of United, the defending champions. Two weeks later Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljungberg scored in a 2‑0 FA Cup final win over Chelsea, completing Vieira’s second double.
Captaincy and the Invincibles
When Tony ‘Mr Arsenal’ Adams retired in August 2002, Vieira inherited the captaincy and led the side to unprecedented heights, including a whole season unbeaten. The 2003‑04 Invincibles recorded 38 matches, 26 wins, 12 draws and no defeats – a record unrivalled in Premier League history.
Vieira featured in 29 of those games, netting two crucial goals against Chelsea and Tottenham. His opening goal after three minutes sparked a 2‑2 draw with Spurs, a result that ultimately secured the title at White Hart Lane.
The rivalry with Roy Keane added drama to Vieira’s legacy. In a tunnel clash ahead of United’s 4‑2 win at Highbury in February 2005, Keane was heard asking, “If you love Senegal so much, why don’t you go play for them?” and later praised Vieira as “one of the very best I’ve ever played with or against”.
“Patrick Vieira didn't score loads of #PL goals, but when he did…💥⚽️” – Premier League, 15 February 2018
Vieira’s final appearance for Arsenal came in the 2005 FA Cup final against Manchester United, a fitting end to a career that turned a 1996 signing into an enduring legend.
