Patrick Dorgu could become Man Utd's new left‑back after Shaw

In the hushed atmosphere of Old Trafford’s press room, Michael Carrick leaned into the microphone and declared that Patrick Dorgu is "like a new signing" for Man Utd and could replace Luke Shaw at left‑back. The 21‑year‑old arrived from Lecce on a £25 million deal in February 2025, scored four goals last season and endured a lengthy hamstring lay‑off. The comments were made at PM GMT+1 and the story is credited to REUTERS/Scott Heppell, By Toby Bryant.

Dorgu's Premier League start

Carrick highlighted Dorgu’s early involvement, noting he started the opening fixture against Hull City and later came off the bench versus Ipswich Town, both times on the left wing. "He can certainly play there," Carrick said when asked about a left‑back role. The winger, who has also featured for Denmark on the right, impressed with a summer goal from a forward position.

Shaw under pressure

Luke Shaw, now 31, has drawn criticism after a "schoolboy" error against the Tigers, a lapse pointed out by club legend Wayne Rooney. With Tyrell Malacia’s contract expiring in June, United have long sought a deputy for Shaw, acknowledging the demanding schedule that could exceed 60 games.

Rumours of United chasing other left‑backs persisted over the summer. Hall was a leading target but fell out of favour at Newcastle under Eddie Howe, while Matthias Jaissle’s arrival ended any chance of a deal. Barcelona’s Balde was on loan talk, yet the Catalan side demanded a permanent move worth over £40 million. Ait‑Nouri’s potential loan‑to‑buy from Manchester City was also explored but ultimately rejected.

United have now confirmed their Premier League squad for the season, with Dorgu’s versatility offering a fresh option on the left flank. If Carrick’s assessment holds, the young winger could become a pivotal figure as United navigate a campaign that will test squad depth.
