Part‑time limits bite East Kilbride as St Mirren storm back in Cup

St Mirren’s late surge erased East Kilbride’s 3‑0 advantage, turning a promising Premier Sports Cup group‑stage tie on Tuesday into a defeat that saw the part‑time side exit the competition, Scott Allan lamented on the BBC Football Podcast, and his analysis.

Allan believes the part‑time nature of East Kilbride caught up with his side as the Scottish League 2 champions surrendered that lead. He said, "They'd put so much in, especially in the last couple of weeks having the Saturday Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, so there's been no kind of respite for us." The relentless schedule left the squad fatigued.

The defeat eliminated East Kilbride from the Cup and left the club reflecting on the narrow margin. Allan described the loss as "extremely extremely harsh" given the effort shown.

East Kilbride manager Mick Kennedy has completely rebuilt the squad after their title win, bringing in 13 new players while 17 departed during the summer window. The overhaul underscores the club’s ambition despite part‑time constraints.

Allan suggested the side is still four players away from their strongest lineup, creating chances and controlling matches against Premiership opposition, including last season's Scottish Cup finalists Dunfermline Athletic. He also highlighted that the team trains only twice a week, limiting work on attacking patterns.

St Mirren will move on to the knock‑out phase as Group C winners unless Dunfermline Athletic produce a three‑goal victory when they travel to Paisley on Sunday, a result that would overturn the group standings.
