Parrott ends Irish drought and Mbappé misses penalty in LaLiga

Troy Parrott's goal, the fourth Irish to score in LaLiga and the first against Real Madrid, gave Real Betis the victory at the La Cartuja Stadium in Seville on Friday 4 September 2026, while Kylian Mbappé left disappointed after missing a penalty in stoppage time.

Alvaro Valles, Fran Garcia and Marc Bartra celebrated Mbappé's missed penalty, accompanied by Parrott, who became the first Irish to score against the whites in the competition.

Betis, the uncomfortable rival of Madrid

In the last eight meetings, Real Madrid has dropped points against Betis on six occasions, and the green-and-whites of Seville have only won two of those matches, establishing themselves as a true "bogey" for the whites.

During the last ten seasons, Betis has been the team that most often has earned points against Real Madrid, with twelve meetings in its favour, tied with Atlético de Madrid. Moreover, it has recorded eight clean sheets, the highest number against the whites, and has accumulated twenty-two points, the second‑highest total obtained against them.

Statistical data that mark the defeat

Real Madrid's defeat represents their first setback of the campaign and the earliest in the league since 2014, when they lost 4‑2 to Real Sociedad in the second round.

Expected goals (xG) data showed that the whites generated 3.16 xG without scoring, the highest goalless level recorded in the last six years. Mbappé contributed 1.78 xG in the match, raising his season total to 5.99 xG, despite having scored only four goals.

José Mourinho received a yellow card, the first in thirteen years for a Real Madrid manager, adding to four other cautions shown to players, including Vinícius Júnior for protests after the final whistle.

Arda Güler created seven chances, equivalent to 0.68 expected assists, and was substituted at the 64th minute for Yan Diomande, a decision Mourinho described as "a risky situation".

The match was also recorded by Getty Images and released under the EA Sports label, highlighting the defeat (Defeat) of the whites and the celebration of the Irish (Irishman) in the League (Liga).
