Parkinson warns Birmingham changes after cup thrashing
Under the bright lights of the Racecourse, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson warned that Birmingham City will need to overhaul their side for tonight’s Championship clash after the Blues were hammered 6-1 by Brentford in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, in midweek, prompting calls for change.
Blues’ recent setbacks
Like Wrexham, the Blues have drawn both of their two Championship matches so far this season. Their cup form was far worse, as Chris Davies' men were thrashed 6-1 by the Premier League Bees Brentford in the second round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night. The 41-year-old head coach has faced criticism after the heavy defeat. The result leaves Birmingham City searching for answers ahead of tonight’s league clash.
Parkinson said the Red Dragons' will concentrate on the positives from their 1-1 league draw with Watford last time out. “There will be changes I should imagine in the (Birmingham) team, first of all because it was a cup game, secondly because of the result and there will be a reaction,” he explained. He added that his own side focused this week on what they did well against Watford and where improvement is needed. “We need to improve and we’ll be looking for that,” Parkinson asserted.
Parkinson also praised the atmosphere at the Racecourse under the lights, saying “We always enjoy the night games at the Racecourse, the atmosphere is always very special.” He noted that Birmingham have been a real competitor of Wrexham’s in recent years, making the upcoming encounter another interesting game. The expectation of changes in Birmingham’s lineup adds further intrigue to the Championship meeting tonight.
Wrexham injury update
Wrexham will be without their top scorer Josh Windass, who remains sidelined with a calf injury that has kept him out all season. However, the 32‑year‑old is expected to return to the matchday squad against the Blues. Midfielder George Thomason is set to miss action until around November after sustaining a thigh injury during the draw with Watford. Fellow midfielder Ben Sheaf and left wing‑back Liberato Cacace will also sit out the visit through injury, while new signings Issa Kabore and Jacques Ekomie are both expected to be available.
Parkinson expects Birmingham City to make adjustments to their team after the cup humiliation, a sentiment echoed by his remarks on the need for a reaction. With both sides carrying recent disappointment, the night promises a tightly contested Championship fixture under the Racecourse lights.
