Paris Brunners get double ban after controversial head‑off celebration
The 20‑year‑old German U21 international Paris Brunner must miss two league games after his return to club AS Monaco, because on 12 September at the Meinau Stadium in Strasbourg he performed a controversial head‑off‑celebration ritual. The disciplinary commission of the French league then suspended him for four games, with only two games initially to be served without playing.
Celebratory Gesture and Punishment
After the equaliser in the 71st minute against RC Strasbourg, Brunner left the stadium and made a head‑off gesture with his hands in the opposing supporters' stand. The referee recorded the incident in the match report, prompting the disciplinary commission of Ligue 1 to open an investigation. The French national ethics council also weighed in on the debate.
The commission imposed a suspension of four games, with only two games initially to be served without playing and the remaining two games on probation. However, another statement from the Ligue de football professionnel referred to a two‑game hard suspension that will take effect from 29 September. The differing statements show that the exact penalty has not yet been definitively clarified.
Reactions from Brunner and Coach
Brunner said in an Instagram message: “You talked about my family, my mother and my father … I did not want to be disrespectful.” He emphasized that he does not regret the confession, but that it was misunderstood. BRUNNER also stressed that after the goal he was driven by many emotions.
Coach Filipe Luis, the Brazilian, commented: “Paris is a very passionate, intense young man. He made a mistake, understood it immediately and apologized.” The club stressed that it takes the matter very seriously and hopes that such an incident will not happen again. Because of the suspension, Brunner will miss the match against Toulouse on 10 October and the away game in Lorient on 18 October.
Season Review and Outlook
Despite the suspension, Brunner has already scored four goals in the first five league matches, contributing to Monaco’s lead in Ligue 1. The temporary suspension highlights the growing importance of player conduct and the enforcement of behavioural rules in French football. For the young U21 international talent, the penalty also represents a learning opportunity and a test for the club.
