Papin claims Mbappe’s media bravado cost him the Ballon d’Or

Former Ballon d’Or winner Jean-Pierre Papin says Kylian Mbappe’s communication strategy has damaged his chances of winning the award, explaining why the Real Madrid forward fell short of the top spot. He argues the forward’s public comments and media appearances ahead of the ceremony undermined his campaign.
Papin, who lifted the Ballon d’Or in 1991 as a France international, criticised Mbappe’s approach after the striker finished second in the voting behind Harry Kane. He highlighted Mbappe’s decision to publicly defend his credentials and claim ‘no one was better than me this season’, saying such statements may have worked against the Frenchman.

Papin also warned that a player’s public image can shape perception during award campaigns, arguing that communication matters as much as on‑field performance. Drawing a parallel with Cristiano Ronaldo, he said Mbappe reminds him of the Portuguese star because teammates seem expected to be at his service.
Mbappe’s Ballon d’Or record shows seventh place in 2017, fourth in 2018, sixth in 2019, ninth in 2021, sixth in 2022, third in 2023, sixth in 2024, seventh in 2025 and second in 2026 behind Kane.
Despite his criticism, Papin believes the Real Madrid forward still possesses the quality and time needed to claim the award. He added that the communication strategy has backfired but he remains convinced Mbappe will eventually win, noting it was a good opportunity yet he still has some way to go.
