The Van Bommels share more than just football; their bond with Belgium is deeply rooted. Mark grew up in Maasbracht, near the border, and his wife Andra studied in Genk. Daughter Renée worked as a journalist for the Jupiler Pro League, while son Thomas spent three years in Belgium playing for clubs such as Patro Eisden and Sporting Hasselt. “It just clicks between us and Belgium,” said Thomas.

Thomas said that their father, Mark, initially wanted to stay closely involved in Ruben’s rehabilitation after a serious cruciate ligament injury. “Every offer that came up, he discussed it with the whole family,” he said, adding that the family was immediately convinced of the new role with the Red Devils.

Andra, Renée and Thomas also talked about the favorable scheduling: “We are glad that the matches of Belgium and the Netherlands do not fall on the same day,” Thomas laughed, allowing the family to follow both games without a dilemma.

His son Ruben believes that the family ties provide an extra motivation: “With our family we are in almost daily contact by phone, and it feels as if we are writing a new chapter together.”
