Palace raises offer for Augsburg’s French centre‑back Chrislain Matsima to €25m

Crystal Palace have raised their bid for Augsburg centre‑back Chrislain Matsima to €25 million, after an earlier €20 million offer was turned down by the Bundesliga club, which insists on a higher fee despite the French defender’s contract running until 2030.

Palace’s latest €25 million proposal signals a renewed determination to sign the French defender, especially after the clubs reportedly agreed personal terms. Augsburg, however, have made clear they will not settle for less than a higher fee, maintaining a firm stance despite the increased offer.

Chrislain Matsima has rapidly become one of Augsburg’s key defenders, forming a solid back three alongside Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Cedric Zesiger. He retained his prominent role even after the arrival of Sandro Wagner, underscoring his importance to the Bundesliga side.

In the opening seven competitive matches of the 2025/26 season, Matsima started every game, finding the net once and providing two assists. These contributions highlighted his offensive potential from a defensive position.

His estimated market value has risen to €22 million, reflecting his growing reputation.

A serious thigh injury in January halted his momentum and raised doubts about a possible move to Palace. He recovered in April, returning to action in four Bundesliga fixtures before the season concluded.

The €25 million bid already represents a substantial return on Augsburg’s original investment in the 24‑year‑old. The Fuggerstädter therefore remain in a strong negotiating position as talks continue.

Matsima’s contract runs until 2030, giving Augsburg long‑term leverage in any transfer discussion. Palace’s persistence suggests they view the defender as a strategic addition despite the financial gap.
