Ouédraogo’s Leipzig season debut in doubt after shoulder injury
RB Leipzig’s 20-year-old midfielder Assan Ouédraogo collapsed during a summer training drill in Saalfelden, Austria, on a crisp Saturday, sustaining a capsule injury to his right shoulder.
The injury will sideline the young German for several weeks, leaving his availability for the 2026/27 Bundesliga campaign uncertain. Leipzig’s medical staff confirmed the setback will be treated conservatively, with no surgery required but an expected lay-off of a few weeks.
The timing raises immediate questions about Ouédraogo’s readiness for new head coach Martin Demichelis’ first competitive season. Leipzig’s schedule offers little margin for delay, with a DFB-Pokal first-round tie against Eintracht Trier on August 22 followed by a Bundesliga opener against Borussia Mönchengladbach a week later.
Ouédraogo joined Leipzig from Schalke’s academy in 2024, but his first season at the club was repeatedly interrupted by injuries. Knee and thigh problems restricted his playing time before he broke through under former coach Ole Werner.
His performances earned him a first Germany U21 call-up in October 2024 and a regular starting role in Werner’s team. A senior Germany debut followed in November after an injury to Mainz midfielder Nadiem Amiri, with Ouédraogo scoring his first international goal in a 6-0 World Cup qualifier win over Slovakia at the Red Bull Arena.
Days later, he opened the scoring in a 2-0 Bundesliga victory over Werder Bremen, only to suffer a tendon injury behind his left knee. Initially expected to keep him out for several weeks, the setback was later confirmed as a severe tendon strain requiring a minimum two-month absence.
He returned to full training during a January camp in Portugal, with Werner stating he “looked very good”, but a renewed knee problem soon emerged. Ouédraogo featured in the closing stages of the season and was included in Germany’s World Cup squad after Lennart Karl withdrew, though he remained an unused substitute throughout the tournament.
Less than 24 hours after the failed transfer of Fisnik Asllani, the fresh shoulder injury further complicates Leipzig’s preparations under Demichelis, adding pressure ahead of the club’s early-season fixtures.
