Oud-AZ-doelman Mathew Ryan returns to Levante for new adventure

Former AZ goalkeeper Mathew Ryan has surprised fans by signing a new deal with Levante UD, committing to the Spanish side through the 2026/27 season. The 34‑year‑old Australian keeper will continue to guard Levante’s goal in La Liga for the upcoming campaign.

De Levante UD officially announced the return of former AZ‑doelman Mathew Ryan, confirming the Australian’s new contract with the Spaanse club.

Ryan arrived at Levante last summer from RC Lens and initially appeared set to depart the Spanish side.

The 34‑year‑old goalkeeper already featured for Levante last season, keeping 36 competitive appearances between the posts.

Following a renewed agreement, he will remain active in La Liga during the 2026/27 campaign.

Ryan’s Dutch‑Belgian stint began in summer 2013 when he moved from Central Coast Mariners to Club Brugge, amassing 102 league games, 37 clean sheets and lifting the 2015 Belgian Cup after a 2‑1 victory over Anderlecht.

He later guarded the nets at Valencia, KRC Genk, Brighton & Hove Albion, Arsenal, Real Sociedad, FC Copenhagen, AS Roma, RC Lens and returned as an AZ‑doelman before moving on.

On the international stage, the Australische keeper captains the Australian national side, has earned 105 caps and was selected for the World Cup squads of 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026.
