Oscar Garcia backs Mika Godts as PSG gamble seeks breakthrough
Oscar Garcia has pledged his full confidence in Belgian winger Mika Godts, insisting that Paris Saint‑Germain manager Luis Enrique can nurture the 55‑million‑euro signing if he is given time to adapt. The former Ajax forward has featured only as a substitute since joining PSG, but he is named in the starting line‑up for Saturday’s clash with Le Mans at 20:45.
Limited minutes fuel doubts
Since his arrival, Godts has accumulated just 144 minutes across six appearances, none of which have been as a starter. The scarcity of playing time has sparked questions about his role, especially with Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia entrenched on the left flank.
Garcia told L’Équipe, relayed by Onze Mondial, ‘He can become a player as important as Kvara.’ He added that the Belgian’s speed, agility and dribbling are even superior to the Georgian’s when he carries the ball.
The Spanish coach first worked with Godts at Ajax between March and June of last year, after serving on the bench at AS Saint‑Étienne. Their previous partnership underpins Garcia’s belief in the youngster’s potential.
Garcia's optimism and upcoming start
Garcia also praised Luis Enrique as the ideal mentor, recalling that he told Godts there was no better coach to guide his development. ‘He must be patient now, but I am convinced PSG will be stronger with Mika,’ he affirmed.
Godts likened to Kvaratskhelia as PSG eye his breakthrough
Godts’ confidence may receive a boost from his recent international goal, scored for Belgium against Italy during the winter break.
The winger is slated to start the Saturday fixture against Le Mans, offering a chance to display the qualities that impressed in the Eredivisie last season. The appointment does not immediately upend PSG’s attacking hierarchy, but provides a platform for him to prove his worth.
A European scout has voiced scepticism, noting that the €55 million investment has yielded only 144 minutes in six games, raising doubts over the playing time he will receive moving forward.
The gamble remains unresolved; Godts now must seize the minutes Luis Enrique allocates if the Parisian project is to justify its price tag.
