On's white prototype marks Mbappé's break from Nike before Atlético

On a bright Saturday at Real Madrid's training complex, 27‑year‑old Kylian Mbappé slipped on a pair of all‑white prototype boots, drawing the attention of photographers as the squad fine‑tuned tactics for Sunday’s derby against Atlético de Madrid at 16:15 in the club’s famed Ciudad Real Madrid facilities.

On's entry into football

The switch ends a two‑decade partnership with Nike, during which Mbappé wore the brand from the age of seven. Swiss sportswear label On confirmed on Friday that the 27‑year‑old champion has signed a new deal, describing the move as the start of its football journey. The statement added that 1998 World Cup winner Thierry Henry will serve as On’s football director.

On, founded in 2010, previously specialised in running and tennis shoes. Among its shareholders is tennis legend Roger Federer, who also left Nike for the Zurich‑based company.

Prototype boots and upcoming derby

During Saturday’s session, Mbappé was seen wearing an all‑white prototype boot, the same model he had reportedly trained with in secret to avoid photographers. The Athletic reported that the player kept the shoes hidden during visible training sessions. The training took place on 19 September 2026 ahead of the seventh round of La Liga.

On co‑founder and CEO David Alleman told the media that the brand’s first football boot will launch in 2027, though a model name has not yet been revealed. The shoes will feature “LightSpray” technology, allowing glue‑less assembly and positioning On as an innovator against established rivals.

Alleman also confirmed that Mbappé will wear the new On boots “in the coming weeks”. It remains unclear whether he will debut the prototype on Sunday’s match against Atlético de Madrid or opt for a temporary solution.

In a farewell communiqué, Mbappé reflected on his twenty‑year relationship with Nike, saying he will never forget the people who believed in him since he was seven. “Our paths separate after twenty years together, but the story does not fade,” the 27‑year‑old wrote.

Mbappé’s high‑profile switch could give On a rare platform in the world’s biggest sport, while Real Madrid continues its kit partnership with Nike. The move highlights how a single endorsement can reshape a brand’s ambitions ahead of its 2027 launch.
