Oliver Bierhoff blames player character as Klopp steps in
In a cramped press room at Berlin’s DFB headquarters, the former DFB‑Boss Oliver Bierhoff leans forward, eyes fixed on the microphone, as he prepares to lay out his verdict on the German Nationalspieler. He argues that recent disappointments stem from deeper issues than tactics.
Oliver Bierhoff worked for the DFB from 2004 until 2022, serving as its chief executive for eighteen years. His long tenure gave him a broad view of the organisation’s inner workings.
The former DFB‑Boss insists the national team’s failure is not a coaching problem. Instead, he pins the blame on a fundamental personality and character deficit among the players.
Speaking to, he said: “With Jogi Löw, Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann the team has worn out three competent and successful coaches.” He added that the squad cannot “take the step” in critical moments, despite having “very professional and good players”.
Player character blamed over tactics
Bierhoff contrasts the Deutsche side with top nations such as Frankreich and Spain, arguing that the German team lacks “outstanding personalities”. He believes the absence of strong character hampers performance on the biggest stages.
He recalled the World Cups in Qatar and the United States, saying the side missed “heart, passion and character”. The former striker warned that without players who assume responsibility and initiative, the team will continue to falter.
Paralysis in critical moments
“I had the feeling we were paralysed and could not react to difficult situations,” Bierhoff said, describing the squad’s inability to respond when under pressure.
Under new national coach Jürgen Klopp, the 58‑year‑old former executive hopes for a turnaround. Klopp’s “double squad” has already made an impression, and he has vowed to “do things differently”. Bierhoff expressed confidence, stating: “I am convinced that he will spark enthusiasm already with the first match.”
The new coach’s message is clear: “The way things have been going cannot continue.” Bierhoff believes that a shift in player mindset, combined with Klopp’s approach, could finally restore Germany’s standing.
